The Minister of Defense, Badaru Abubakar, has inaugurated two ATAK-129 attack helicopters at a ceremony held at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) base in Katsina. This marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to tackle insecurity in the North-West region, particularly in Katsina State.
Accompanied by the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar, the Minister emphasized the critical role the helicopters will play in combating terrorist activities. He described the launch as a demonstration of Nigeria’s progress in addressing terrorism and restoring peace to the nation.
“We are close to ending terrorist activities in Nigeria,” the Minister stated, noting that the state-of-the-art helicopters are equipped with advanced technology to support surveillance, rapid response, and community protection in conflict-affected areas.
Katsina State has been one of the states most affected by insecurity in Nigeria, with widespread incidents of armed banditry, kidnappings, and killings. These challenges have severely impacted the state’s economy and displaced many rural residents seeking safety elsewhere.
Security experts have hailed the launch of these helicopters as a strategic move to curb terrorist attacks. The aircraft are specifically designed for reconnaissance missions and quick-response operations during assaults, providing a critical edge in maintaining security.
Recently, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umar Radda, Ph.D., also launched the Katsina Community Watch Corps (KCWC) to assist security forces in restoring peace across the state. This initiative has already contributed to reducing attacks in some areas, underscoring the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promises to ensure safety for all Nigerians.
Speaking after the inauguration, Air Marshal Hassan Bala Abubakar reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s dedication to supporting the mission. “This initiative positions us as a leading force in combating all forms of terrorism and security threats,” he stated.
Residents of Katsina State have expressed optimism that these measures will significantly reduce insecurity, restore peace, and bring stability to the region.
